What is—and isn’t—Medicasp?

Many people trust Medicasp to keep their scalp looking and feeling healthy. Here’s what it is, what it’s for, and when it makes sense to use it:

Medicasp is more than a cosmetic shampoo—it’s an OTC medicated dandruff shampoo formulated to help control symptoms.

Its active ingredient is coal tar 0.5%, which helps normalize fast scalp cell turnover and calm irritation—helping break the itch–flake cycle to control dandruff symptoms, even when Malassezia is part of the picture. It acts primarily as a keratoplastic, slowing excessive keratinocyte proliferation and helping reduce scaling/itching.

Use Medicasp when symptoms show up—such as flaking, itching, irritation, redness or scaling—and use as directed.

If symptoms persist or worsen (e.g., burning), stop use and ask a doctor.

When should you not use it?

Do not use on broken, irritated, or inflamed scalp skin.

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes; rinse thoroughly.

Ask a doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a condition that covers a large area, or if considering use on a child.

Medicasp is formulated to control dandruff/seborrheic-dermatitis symptoms. If flaking is due to product buildup or other causes, this product may not address it.

Do not use for prolonged periods or with other forms of psoriasis therapy such as ultra violet radiation or prescription drugs unless directed to do so by a doctor.

Stop use and ask a doctor if irritation or redness increases, or if condition worsens or does not improve after regular use of this product as directed.

Avoid unnecessary sun exposure after using tar products.

Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.
